David Gaither

David Gaither is a contemporary artist whose practice which blurs the confines of the figurative and abstract, reality and fantasy. Gaither’s works have been exhibited all over the world, from leading US cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta, to as far as London, Lausanne, Paris, Dubai, Tokyo and Hong Kong. His works are in permanent collections in museums and corporations globally. In his paintings, Gaither is known for incorporating several different types of paints and materials, such as acrylic and composite paints, gouache and oils.

A self-taught artist, he began making art at the age of three. His parents noticed his absorption in art making, and provided him with the proper environment and support to cultivate his passion and talent, such as allowing him time early in the morning or late at night to work, as well as buying him art supplies. Over the years, he explored varying genres and styles, eventually becoming a painter of abstraction but with often figuratively realist elements combined into a work. Due to the size, complexity and technical skill of his art, works often require months or even years of planning and execution.

The goals of his paintings are to create “living works” in which the shapes and patterns appear to move dynamically throughout the medium. The shapes, patterns and textures symbolize the complexity and layering of an individual (i.e., values, beliefs, preferences), as well as the world we live in (i.e., different countries, landscapes, races, languages, religions, etc.). Another element of his works is depth and dimensionality, in which the complex layering of paints and other materials allows the viewer to capture different perspectives each time they examine the painting.
