01 — Biography
A life
in art.
Birgit Huttemann-Holz is a Detroit-based painter and printmaker whose work moves between landscape, floral imagery and gestural abstraction. Saturated colour and fluid marks give her compositions a sense of growth and movement, while the vulnerability of natural forms remains central to their emotional character.
Her practice includes encaustic painting and monotype printing with pigmented wax. Working with heat introduces uncertainty: marks can shift, layers can change and an unexpected result can redirect the composition. This relationship between control and accident connects her materials with broader questions of change, memory and renewal.
A 2017 residency at The Studios of Key West led to a sustained engagement with orchids, gardens and imagined places of refuge. These subjects informed The Weight of Orchids and Metaphor of Flora. Later bodies of work, including Body of Wilderness, continue her exploration of the relationship between an external landscape and an interior emotional world.
Huttemann-Holz has exhibited in the United States and Europe and has published books on encaustic practice, including How to Create Encaustic Art. She received the 2022 Female Lifetime Achievement Award from ADC Fine Art’s Art Comes Alive programme. Represented by Studio 54 Fine Art, she joins Life is Beautiful on 10 October 2026.
02 — Artistic practice
The possibilities of wax and paper.
For her monotypes, Huttemann-Holz works pigmented beeswax on a heated aluminium plate and transfers the image to paper by hand. Successive impressions, including printing on both sides, create layers through which light and colour interact.
The wax can make paper translucent, while metallic pigments introduce further surface effects. Each print develops through a changing sequence of decisions, producing an individual work rather than a mechanically repeated image.
